High Stakes for the High Court

For a while, it seemed that Hurricane Katrina would push Supreme Court nominee John Roberts off the front page, or at least the nation’s radar. The 50-year-old judge appeared to be heading for sure confirmation.

That all changed over the weekend with news that Chief Justice Rehnquist had died. Now, President Bush had two vacancies to fill ASAP. Then came the annoucement from Bush that he was nominating Roberts to succeed Rehnquist for the top job.
