The Family and Work Dilemma
photo

Every family and every mother knows about it. The push-pull tensions around work and home life just don’t go away — and especially for women.

Last week, a page one New York Times article hit the stands, saying many female students at the elite Yale University plan to shelve their careers and “happily play a traditional female role, with motherhood their main commitment.”

Suddenly the whole complicated battle was boiling again. Critics called the story hogwash and old, a rehash that threw women back on a false choice. Feminists fumed that a new generation of women is still left to make brutal tradeoffs with so little accommodation from society. And families, one by one, struggle to find the way.

Hear about the perpetually unresolved issue and recurring headline of women, motherhood, and work.

Guests:

Jessica Marsden, Staff Writer for the Yale Daily News;
Diane Brady, Senior Writer for Business Week, and mother of 3 children;
Amy Richards, writer, activist, lecturer and author of the forthcoming book “Opting In: The Case of Motherhood and Feminism”;
Jennifer Bresaris, lawyer.

Ten Minutes with Brzezinski

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski joined Tom from Washington, D.C. this morning and shared his impressions of President Obama’s first face-to-face meetings with Russia’s leaders.  Brzezinski called it a “sober and realistic summit, one which didn’t create undue expectations, but one which also marked some real progress…. There was, in a sense, an unstated agreement to disagree, and that’s [...]
