The Forever War
photo

By Host Tom Ashbrook:

Somewhere out there, beneath the pale moonlight of frontier Pakistan, someone’s thinking of Americans and George W. Bush and the troops in Iraq. Four years after 9/11 and Bush’s unfulfilled “dead or alive” promise, Osama Bin Laden is uncaptured and, as far as we know, alive, well and watching.

According to journalist Mark Danner, the Al Qaeda chief must be thinking that he’s winning the war on terror. Four years after Pearl Harbor, America ruled Germany and Japan. Four years after 9/11, a bearded man in the mountains still reigns free.

Hear a conversation with Mark Danner about Osama bin Laden’s view of where America’s war on terror stands.

Guests:

Ellen Knickermeyer, Washington Post reporter based in Baghdad;
Mark Danner, Professor of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley and staff writer for The New Yorker.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
