For most of the last five years, on the surface, many hard core American conservatives could hardly believe their luck. A GOP indebted to the religious right owned both houses of Congress, and the born-again President of the United States talked Bible and moral values like no president in living memory.

Yes, there was a drumbeat of worry: the deficit was soaring, the war in Iraq was not going well, the president offered more rhetoric than action against gay marriage.

But he was their man, and when it came right down to it, he would change the Supreme Court, and change the country. Then came the Harriet Miers nomination. Now, the hard right is crying betrayal.
