China’s Sexual Revolution
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

“Desperate Housewives” makes its national television debut today in China. But the hanky panky on Wisteria Lane is patty-cake next to the sexual revolution the Chinese themselves are in the midst of.

After centuries of Confucian strictures and decades of Maoist propriety, the new free-market China also turns out to be, by comparison, the free sex China.

In a nation of a billion-plus men and women, it’s no surprise that sex goes on. But by all accounts, China’s sexual mores are in free flight, as sexuality becomes a primary stage for personal freedom. And up go abortion, divorce and HIV rates, too.

Hear about freedom, morality, and the sexual revolution in China.

Guests:

Jaime Florcruz, Beijing Bureau Chief for CNN

Anthony Saich, Professor of International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University

Eva Lee Inha,
Former student at Fudan University in Shanghai, where she translated and produced the Vagina Monologues

Hou Xiaoshuo, PhD student in sociology at Boston University.
