Earthquake Relief in Pakistan

As the Gulf Coast continues to struggle to recover from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, another struggle goes on in the mountains of Northern Pakistan. The earthquake that ripped through Pakistan and Indian Kashmir two months ago killed 87,000 people. It left 3.5 million people homeless — and the cold of winter is only making matters worse for them.

The Associated Press reported last week that some of the survivors, many living in thin tents, are digging graves now — before the ground completely freezes. And international relief organizations are wondering why so much of the foreign aid that was promised to help quake victims has not yet arrived.

Guests:

Khalid Aziz, former Chief Secretary of the Northwest Frontier Province and Chairman of the Regional Institute of Policy Research and Training, an organization formed after the earthquake that is exploring ways to create jobs and provide skills to earthquake victims.

IED’s in Afghanistan: Hard Numbers

The Department of Defense provided On Point with some statistics about IED attacks in Afghanistan, where there has been an increase in the use of such weapons over the past 14 months. It’s striking to see the spike in numbers — from 2,677 IED incidents in 2007 to 8,159 last year.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
