John McWhorter

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Conservative black thinker John McWhorter doesn’t care for an awful lot of people who claim to care for black America.

Jesse Jackson comparing the New Orleans convention center to a slave ship does blacks no favor, he says. Neither do rappers 50 Cent or Mos Def, or Kanye West claiming “Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

Neither, says McWhorter, is there salvation in what he calls the “misguided white benevolence” that followed the civil rights movement.

John McWhorter looks back to the social fabric of black communities of the 1950s and asks: where has that gone?

Hear a conversation with John McWhorter about his conservative take on black America in 2006.

Guests:

John McWhorter, senior fellow at The Manhattan Institute and author of the new book “Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America

Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of Black Popular Culture at Duke University, author of “New Black Man.”

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
