The calendar turns, a new year begins, (Happy New Year, everybody) and, wouldn’t you know it, we still have to earn a living, make a buck, make the rent, pay the mortgage, and, we hope, build a nest egg on the side.

If you were counting on the Dow to do that for you last year, too bad. The lead industrial index ended down for the year. If you were an oil baron, you scored. If your house is your next egg, watch out.

For the year ahead, the prognosticators are placing their bets right now.
