Retiring Abroad
photo

By guest host Anthony Brooks:

Owning a second home has long been a part of the American dream, but lately many Americans are finding their dreams overseas.

We are not talking about the very rich with homes in Tuscany, Provence or the Caribbean. We are talking about middle-income Americans finding deals in places like Argentina, Panama, Bulgaria and Croatia, where prices are still low, the dollar still strong, and the quality of life often better than here in the U.S.

Many older Americans are finding retirement comfort abroad that is no longer affordable back home. They’ve given up sunny southern California and Boca Raton, Florida in favor of that picturesque cottage in a Bulgarian Black Sea resort.

Hear about affordable homes to retire to beyond America’s shores.

Guests:

Nigel Leck, international property expert on the BBC program “Uncharted Territory”

Maria Reynolds, co-owner of Reynolds Propiedades & Relocation

David Michonski, chief executive of Coldwell Banker Hunt Kennedy and an international real estate specialist

Tom Mead, 69-year-old semi-retired restaurateur. He moved to Costa Rica four and a half years ago with his wife Nancy.

Greg Leach, 53-year-old building contractor who made a $100,000 investment with a partner on a vacation getaway near San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

Listener comments
  • I am listening to a program you aired on Feb. 22, 2006.
I bookmarked and saved the story at that time. Why? IT GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK. I was, at the time 64, and trapped in a very unhappy marriage. Prior to this story I was lost, depressed and was starting to care little about living.
Your story revived me. I began researching, separated from my wife, at the time, who was much younger than myself and financially independent, much more than me. Long story short, I am divorced and living a wonderful life in Costa Rica. THANK YOU
