Perspective on the Pentagon
photo

by Tom Ashbrook.

Sometimes you have to step way back to see what’s going on in the world. President Bush steps back, and sees a fight of good and evil. Writer James Carroll steps back and sees sixty-plus years of the Pentagon driving an American predilection toward war.

Carroll grew up the son of an Air Force general in the endless corridors of the five-sided heart of American military power in Washington. Today, he says, Americans are so deep in the grip of a war-making view of the world that they don’t even see it. And even the pushback of generals on Iraq won’t stop it.

Up next On Point: fear and loathing from World War II to Iraq – the case for America as prisoner of the Pentagon.

Guests:

James Carroll, author of the new book “House of War: The Pentagon and the Disatrous Rise of American Power”

Andrew Bacevich, professor of International Relations at Boston University and author of “The New American Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War”

Ten Minutes with Brzezinski

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski joined Tom from Washington, D.C. this morning and shared his impressions of President Obama’s first face-to-face meetings with Russia’s leaders.  Brzezinski called it a “sober and realistic summit, one which didn’t create undue expectations, but one which also marked some real progress…. There was, in a sense, an unstated agreement to disagree, and that’s [...]

India, China and the Climate

The passage of the House climate bill – discussed in our first hour today – has been greeted with enthusiasm in many quarters.
