John Updike’s “Terrorist”
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Novelist John Updike made his name writing about white, suburban Americans living white suburban lives. But he’s taken his show and novelist’s eye on the road — to Africa in “The Coup,” and to apocalypse in “Toward the End of Time.”

Now, at 74, Updike is projecting himself into the mind of an 18-year-old Egyptian-Irish-American Muslim ready to turn suicide bomber in New York’s Lincoln Tunnel. His new novel is called “Terrorist,” and — with last week’s mass arrest of young men in Canada — it speaks straight to the era’s headlines and to the combustible mix of angry Islamists and played-out consumer culture.

Hear a conversation with author John Updike about his latest work, “Terrorist.”

Guest:

John Updike, author of the new book, “Terrorist,” and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for “Rabbit is Rich” and “Rabbit at Rest.”
