Under the Deep Blue Sea
photo

by Tom Ashbrook.

At the dawn of the underwater world’s televised scuba era, when Jacques Cousteau began to introduce the air-bound world to the wonders of the sea, British marine biologist Trevor Norton was already there; slipping through kelp forests, marveling at the underwater plunge of the cormorant, exploring the seabeds that would become his second home.

We are seven-tenths salt water, he knew as a boy. Our blood and a bucket of sea water are close cousins. We have gills in the womb.

Trevor Norton took to the sea for life. Now he’s telling that story, of wonders and waste under the sea around the world.

Hear about life in the sea, and the life of the sea today, with marine biologist Trevor Norton.

Guests:

Trevor Norton, professor of Marine Biology at the University of Liverpool and director of the Port Erin Marine Laboratory on the Isle of Man. His new memoir is “Underwater to Get Out of the Rain: A Love Affair with the Sea.”

Ten Minutes with Brzezinski

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski joined Tom from Washington, D.C. this morning and shared his impressions of President Obama’s first face-to-face meetings with Russia’s leaders.  Brzezinski called it a “sober and realistic summit, one which didn’t create undue expectations, but one which also marked some real progress…. There was, in a sense, an unstated agreement to disagree, and that’s [...]

India, China and the Climate

The passage of the House climate bill – discussed in our first hour today – has been greeted with enthusiasm in many quarters.
