Inequality in America: The Widening Gulf
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Americans love a winner, and dream of being winners. That is the American dream. But there’s another dream, too — of a thriving democracy of citizens with shared interests and equal opportunity, a land without aristocracy, a land of common dreams.

For the last thirty years, that dream has come under pressure from a head-spinning growth in inequality in America. Wages of the typical worker have been stagnant after inflation for decades. Wealth and income of the top has been absolutely soaring, stratospheric, and out of sight.

Now the gap between the top and the bottom is so large that sober voices worry it is threatening the fundamental fabric of American society.

Hear about the soaring inequality in America, and what it means for the country.

Guests:

Robert Rubin, Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee at Citigroup, and former Treasury Secretary under President Clinton;
Robert Shiller, Professor of Economics at Yale University

Teresa Tritch, Editorial Board member of the New York Times

Jack Beatty, On Point News Analyst and Senior Editor of The Atlantic Monthly.
