Strategizing a Solution in the Middle East
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

There was absolute rage at Israel and the United States across the Middle East this weekend, as Israeli bombs killed scores of civilians — many of them children — in Qana, Lebanon.

The strain on the faces of George Bush and Condoleeza Rice were evident. The strain on American relations with old allies and friendly governments in the Arab world is huge, and maybe near a breaking point.

There are desperate, angry calls for an immediate ceasefire and determined, angry calls for more bloody war. Where America’s real long-term interest lies on this smoking battlefield is the subject of urgent debate.

Hear about debating the way forward in the Middle East, and what America should do now.

Guests:

Thomas Pickering, former US Ambassador to the United Nations & former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs

Jeremy Shapiro, Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution & Adjunct Professor of Security Studies, Georgetown University

Dr. Daniel Goure, Vice President of the Lexington Institute, formerly Director of the Office of Strategic Competitiveness in the Office of the Secretary of Defense & a member of the 2001 Department of Defense Transition Team.
