Globalization in the Middle-East
photo

By guest host John Hockenberry:

So you’ve got your Lexis, you’ve got your olive tree — the world is flat, and a tsunami of globalization is going to remake it. You are all ready for the 21st century, right?

Thinkers from Tom Friedman to Milton Freidman say open markets and economic relationships are the key to global stability. Yet participation in the global economy didn’t seem to restrain the warring Israelis and Lebanese. What gives?

The evangelical western mission to bring economic prosperity and democracy to the Middle East seems to be having trouble recruiting converts. The more things change in the world the more they seem to stay the same in the Middle East.

Is globalization a bad idea in the cradle of civilization?

Guests:

Mark LeVine, Associate Professor of Middle Easter History, Culture, and Islamic Studies at University of California, Irvine and author of the book “Why They Don’t Hate Us: Lifting the Veil on the Axis of Evil”

Douglas Iriwn, Professor of Economics at Dartmouth University and author of “Free Trade Under Fire”

Jerry Meyer, author of “A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918″
