Andrew Sullivan on the Conservative Soul
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Conservative editor, blogger and activist Andrew Sullivan crossed the pond from his native UK years ago to embrace America with the conservatism of Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

Then American conservatism took a trip of its own, to the Christian Right, and left Andrew Sullivan — gay, Catholic, old-time conservative — painfully stranded.

Now, he’s out to fight for the conservative soul — against the GOP’s current big government, big spending, centralized-power fundamentalism — and for the conservatism of personal liberty and constitutional order.

Hear a conversation with the provocative Andrew Sullivan as he goes to war with the Christian Right for the conservative soul.

Quotes from the Show:

“I am a conservative committed to my principles.” Andrew Sullivan

“The new divide between the left and the right is the separation between state and church and the fusion of religion and government.” Andrew Sullivan

“Real conservatives are not partisan.” Andrew Sullivan

“I made one bad judgment in supporting Bush in 2000 and I deeply regret it.” Andrew Sullivan

Guests:

Andrew Sullivan, author of “The Conservative Soul: How We Lost it, How to Get it Back.”

Reverend Robert Schenck, President of Faith and Action in Washington DC.
