Carly Fiorina’s Tough Choices
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

When the going was good, you couldn’t get closer to rock star status in business than Carly Fiorina did. Her up-by-the-bootstraps story — from bright-eyed receptionist to Chairman and CEO of Hewlett-Packard — was a cover story all over the country.

She was the hard-charging woman at the very top of Silicon Valley’s legendary printer and computer company, HP — the most powerful businesswoman in America. “There is no glass ceiling,” Fiorina famously said as she took the reins. In 2005, she was sacked.

Now, HP is engulfed in a spying scandal. And Carly Fiorina is out with a memoir the Wall Street Journal calls “back-stabbing.”

Hear a conversation with Carly Fiorina, the once most powerful businesswoman in America, about her own story.

Quotes from the Show:

“I myself was pretexted [by Hewlett Packard].” Carly Fiorina

“I don’t think my dismissal was about gender. Perhaps the way I was dismissed was along gender lines. [My dismissal] was about board dysfunction. Dysfunction happens when people can not talk about issues in a straightforward way.” Carly Fiorina

“It amazes me when men choose to talk about what helps or hurts the sisterhood. With all due respect, they have no idea.” Carly Fiorina

Guests:

Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and author of “Tough Choices: A Memoir.”

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
