Condi Rice and US Foreign Policy
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

It’s a wild world out there — a little too wild lately — and six years into a Bush administration that promised security, humility and effectiveness, a lot of Americans are asking what’s going on.

Asia is going nuclear with a North Korean A-bomb. The heart of the Mideast is apparently going nuclear with Iran unchecked. Iraq is still in meltdown above the world’s most vital energy supplies.

These problems didn’t start in 2000, but they sure didn’t end then. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has suggested it’s just a time of “turbulence” on the way to victory. Others see a crisis of crises.

Hear about turbulence or engine failure with respect to Condoleeza Rice and Bush’s foreign policy.

Guests:

Brett Stevens, member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal.;
Robin Wright, Diplomatic Correspondent for the Washington Post.;
Bruce Jentleson, Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Duke University.;
Dan Blumenthal, Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
