Fox News Turns Ten
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

In October 1996, the Fox News Channel first hit cable TV. This week, Fox News at 10 is an anniversary. Ten years on, Fox News is easily the most polarizing news channel in American media, and long-since a major player in American politics.

Its talk-meisters — Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and more — rally conservatives and drive liberals wild. Its newscasts — “Fair and Balanced,” “The Most Powerful Name in News” — have set new standards of news with attitude, and audience records.

Critics call the net effect propaganda masquerading as news. Fox fans say it has just rounded out the politics of the American media.

Hear about Fox News at 10, and its impact on the nation.

Quotes from the Show:

“Fox has achieved something CNN was never able to do except for the Larry King Live Show, and that is creating distinct programs.” Tom Rosenstiel

“Fox News Channel is a misnomer. It has nothing to do with news. Fox demeans news. It’s a propoganda outlet.” Steve Rendall

“Fox News did not create tabloid journalism but nobody does it better.” Steve Rendall

“The reason Fox News is so popular is because it’s populist.” Jonah Goldberg

Guests:

Tom Rosenstiel, director for The Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Steve Rendall, senior analyst at Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR).

Jonah Goldberg, editor-at-large of The National Review Online.
