Change and America
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

“Change” is the big word of the day, with a resounding midterm vote sending new blood into Congress and statehouses across the country. But how much change Americans are in the market for, and in what direction, still feel like open questions today.

Real change is not easy. It’s often ducked. It’s seldom achieved without strong leadership. America flourished when its strengths and direction aligned with the realities of the 20th century.

Will it adapt and flourish again amid the challenges of the 21st? On the day after a big election, that’s the big picture question.

Hear a conversation with political philosopher Michael Sandel, and business world leadership guru Warren Bennis about change and America.

Quotes from the Show:

“I think the country is ready for change but it’s not clear where and what direction that change is heading.” Warren Bennis

“Things are very much in flux right now and there is no core constituency that has crystallized.” Warren Bennis

“The electorate doesn’t know what the shape of that change is.” Michael Sandel

“Both parties have to reimagine the political landscape of America.” Michael Sandel

“The fundamental change has to be to the political agenda.” Michael Sandel

Guests:

Michael Sandel, one of the world’s best known and most influential political theorists. He is a professor of government at Harvard University and author of “Democracy’s Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy” and “Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics.”;

Warren Bennis, founding chairman of The Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California, where he is a University professor. He has consulted for many Fortune 500 companies and served as an advisor to presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Reagan.

India, China and the Climate

The passage of the House climate bill – discussed in our first hour today – has been greeted with enthusiasm in many quarters. But in some ways, the real question is whether a global framework can be established in Copenhagen in December, when countries will negotiate a new international treaty to curb greenhouse gases. After all, America emits only [...]
