Emergence-SEE!
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Here’s the story: in 2006, a creaking slave ship full of bones hauls up out of the Hudson River at the feet of the Statue of Liberty. And New York City — mainly black New York City, but white too — goes into a fit of deep anger, attraction, revulsion, and remembrance.

In a one-man show on in New York now, actor and writer Daniel Beaty plays forty-three different characters whirling around the provocation of the ship and its bones, exploring the state of African-American freedom and memory — rich blacks, poor blacks, guilt-laden whites and African chiefs all grappling with the remembrance now of what was then.

Hear a conversation with actor Daniel Beaty about a slave ship, remembrance, and African-American responses today.

Quotes from the Show:

“I’m passionate about the state of race relations in America. I’m passionate about the state of freedom both on the personal level and as a society.” Daniel Beaty

“I’m looking at slavery as a place of empowerment.” Daniel Beaty

“There has to a healing that still has to take place.” Daniel Beaty

“We have to tell the story truthfully about America’s past.” Daniel Beaty

Guests:

Daniel Beaty, performer and writer. He created and stars in his one-man show “Emergence-SEE!”
