Writer Jim Harrison

By host Tom Ashbrook:

Poet, screenwriter and novelist Jim Harrison writes in the old style — of big appetites, big passions, earthy love, men’s men, and the woods. He did it in “Legends of the Fall,” the novella that put a young Brad Pitt on the big screen, wrestling the bear in the rugged Montana west.

He’s done it again and again in the deep woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, up toward Sault St. Marie, along the Great Lakes, where the Chippewa mixed with immigrant Finns and Swedes.

In his latest novel, “Returning to Earth”, Jim Harrison’s broad-shouldered, part-Chippewa hero is dying. He is a good man with a good wife who’s yearning to leave what matters to the ones he loves and to die his way.

This hour On Point: Returning to Earth with novelist Jim Harrison.

Quotes from the Show:

“I utterly disbelieve in any concepts of ethnic or genetic virtue.” Jim Harrison

“You can’t question Donald’s [the main character of the book] right to go the way he wants to.” Jim Harrison

Guests:

Jim Harrison, author of “Returning to Earth,” “True North” and “Legends of the Fall”.

  • I have read most of Jim’s books and always enjoy the stories and the thought provoking style of his writing. When I read True North Returning To Earth I could smell the woods..
