Victorian Values
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

With televangelist Jerry Falwell’s death this week, the story of his Moral Majority crusade has been very much in the news again.

British historian Ben Wilson, has been looking at the moral majority movement of another era — from the licentious, libertine, anything goes Britain of the wild 18th century to the mother of all buttoned-up, moral majority moments — the Victorian Age.

It’s quite a story, of sex and virtue, liberty and law – a real showdown over what makes the truly good and free life.

This hour On Point: the moral majority of yesteryear, and how Britain went Victorian.

Guests:

Ben Wilson, author of the new book, “The Making of Victorian Values.”

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
