Palestinians and the Gaza Divide
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

“Nobody saw it coming,” said Condoleeza Rice last week, after Hamas militiamen stormed through the Gaza Strip, threw out US-backed Fatah security, and ripped the map of the Palestinian world in half.

In five stunning, bloody days, Fatah ran. The democratically-elected government that Hamas dominated is now in tatters. Hamas runs Gaza. Fatah runs the West Bank.

Israel, the US and Europe are lining up behind the West Bank. But Palestinian hopes and dreams are not so easily divided.

This hour On Point: Palestinians speak, on the earthquake that has torn their world.

Guests:

Taghreed El-Khodary, Gaza City reporter for the New York Times

Hanan Ashrawi, Independent member of Palestinian Parliament

Sari Nusseibeh, President and professor of philosophy at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem

Beshara Doumani, professor of social history at UC Berkeley.
