While polio may seem like a relic of the past, for some, the disease’s aftermath is very much alive. Writer and childhood polio survivor Susan Richards Shreve has written about it in her new memoir “Warm Springs: Traces of a Childhood at FDR’s Polio Haven.”
Shreve was paralyzed as a baby but spent the rest of her life triumphing over challenges. She explains hear why she was expelled from Warm Springs, after a terrifying accident that gave her lifelong guilt. She talks about the shame felt by polio victims in the repressed 1950s and the courage of chronically-ill children.
