Population Shifts in the West
photo

By guest host Jane Clayson:

Declining birth rates in the Western world may tip the balance of power to the East. A top intelligence advisor says the economy, international security, even the United State’s stature, are all on the line. And it’s because we are not having enough children.

But a leading economist disagrees: technology and education will ride the U.S. economy into continued success. A global populations expert warns if we overpopulate the planet we will have nothing left.

There is a heated debate about how–and whether–to cool the sizzle of the West’s dwindling birth rates.

This hour On Point: the Western world’s shrinking population.

Guests:

Herbert E. Meyer, former Vice Chairman of the CIA National Intelligence Council

David Kelly, Senior Economic Advisor, Putnam Investments

John Guillebaud, Co-Chair, Optimum Population Trust

  • I agree that having too many children can deplete all of the worlds resources at some point. But there is a point where there can be just the right amount. Sort of like the “Butter-Zone” for a population. And I agree with the fact that education and technology can put growth in the US economy. And by doing that, we will find the butter zone.

  • What I’m trying to say is; the west needs to put growth in their economy through education and technology first before they can put growth in their population.

Ten Minutes with Brzezinski

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski joined Tom from Washington, D.C. this morning and shared his impressions of President Obama’s first face-to-face meetings with Russia’s leaders.  Brzezinski called it a “sober and realistic summit, one which didn’t create undue expectations, but one which also marked some real progress…. There was, in a sense, an unstated agreement to disagree, and that’s [...]

India, China and the Climate

The passage of the House climate bill – discussed in our first hour today – has been greeted with enthusiasm in many quarters. After all, America emits only [...]
