Barry Bonds: Home Run King
photo

By host Tom Ashbrook:

On a cool Tuesday night, last night, in San Francisco, Barry Lamar Bonds stepped to the plate, under the lights, before a sellout crowd of Giants fans, took an 86 mile per hour fastball from Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik, knocked the ball over the right field wall and stepped into baseball history.

Babe Ruth held the home run record in major league baseball. Hank Aaron held it since 1974.

Now, Barry Bonds — he of the mighty swing and steroid-use allegations — is the homerun king. 756 homers.

This hour On Point: Barry Bonds, baseball history, and the future of the sport.

Guests:

John Donovan, senior writer for Sports Illustrated

George Vecsey, sports columnist for the New York Times

Shaun Assael, senior writer for ESPN the Magazine

Leonard Moore, professor at the University of Texas

Jack Beatty, On Point news analyst, senior editor at the Atlantic Monthly magazine
