Iowa Caucuses: The Republicans
photo

It is Caucus Day in Iowa — the first formal vote of Election ‘08 and the long race for the White House. If the Democrats’ complicated caucus procedure looks like a square dance, the Republicans’ is pretty straightforward — show up; vote.

But the GOP contest this year has been anything but a straight shot. Mitt Romney has spent big with no guarantee of a win. Mike Huckabee has grown big on a shoestring. National poll leader Ruby Giuliani is a no-show.

It’s turmoil time in the GOP — but also time to decide.

This hour On Point: Iowa Republicans speak up on where they stand — and why — on Caucus Day.

-Tom Ashbrook

Guests:

James Lynch, political reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Dennis Goldford, professor of politics and international relations at Drake University.

Eve Doi, will caucus for Mitt Romney.

John Scheppler, will caucus for Mike Huckabee.

Don McDowell, undeclared.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
