Former U.S. Secretary of State — and Treasury, and Labor — George Shultz has been mixing it up with the great powers of Washington and the world since the Eisenhower administration.

As Ronald Reagan’s secretary of state he became a hero to conservatives and more for his role in ending the Cold War. Now, at 87, Shultz is still in the thick of public policy debate — a Republican eminence weighing in on pre-emptive war, nuclear disarmament, health care, social security, and the legacy of George W. Bush.

This hour, On Point: George Shultz on the state of the nation.

George Shultz served as Secretary of Labor and Secretary of the Treasury in the Nixon administration and as Secretary of State in the Reagan administration, and is now a distinguished fellow at the Hoover Institution and an Honorary Chair at the Stanford Institution for Economic Policy Research. He is the co-author of the new book, “Putting Our House in Order: A Guide to Social Security and Health Care Reform.”
