My father would always say, "A nods as good as a wink to a blind horse."

He would also provide deep insight into being happy:
"Jackie: I don't care if you shovel $h!t against the tide as long as your happy doing it!"

Ironically while stationed in Germany with the US Army I met my wife who worked as an engineer at a large sewage treatment plant.

The small city that we currently live in on the German "Wine Street" is full of folks who subscribe to my father's thoughts on happiness. It is especially a pleasure to deal with the men that work at the recycling center as they are happy with their jobs, even if it is manual labor! They actually have several statues of Angels at the entrance to their facility!

Two offerings, one a mixed metaphor my mother often said: "A closed mouth gathers no feet".

and the other, from my father, which doesn't translate well as it is based on the fact that in Italian the same word is used to mean both "subtle" and "thin" but the gist of it is:
"If you are too thin (subtle) your pants will fall down"

Reply to earlier posts:

I. ” A British coworker was often heard saying ‘Oh, he/she is out of the pail' and "I believe that the coworker may have meant “beyond the pale,” meaning “outside the bounds of acceptable behavior.” Though an accurate interpretation, let us not forget that this saying also refers to the what stiff, old brits used to regard as 'uncivilized', Irish (!) behaviors. Those from 'beyond the pale' were those who fought/ escaped the clutches of the British empire.

II. "The squeaky wheel gets oiled" (Western/ American? proverb)

"The nail that sticks out gets pounded down" (Japanese proverb)

My father was a carpenter
The carpenter's rule:
Think three times, measure twice, cut once.

His Scots apprentice master said:
Jist because you know the trade dinna mean you know all the tricks thereof.

Jist because you know some of the tricks dinna mean you know the trade.

"A bird may teach a fish to fly, but where would they live?"

Sometimes it's possible for two very odd things to mix, like oil and water. But what kind of an outcome are you looking at? Oil and water will eventually separate.

A duck and a beaver might even possibly mate ... but what will come of it? A platypus? Oh ... wait .... bad example .....

My Grandfather was very fond of "When you loose control, you give it to someone else"

Taught me to always be mindful of where I gave my control. Also makes you think on WHO or WHAT you are giving power over yerself.

Look at how the Government is right now. We've willingly given our control over to our Government, and what have we gotten for it? The Patriot Act.

And now our Financial Market and our Government have given away the Control of the Country.

Who have they given it to? It ain't us...

The President has lost Control of The War on Terror. Not much of a "WAR" in the first place. But he's lost control. Now, through Fear, he's given our Nation's Control to the Terrorists.

Welp, that's my two bits worth, hope it don't clog nothin up ;)

I think that explaining a proverb could limit their effect, almost like trying to explain a joke if nobody laughs.

A bird without wings is still a bird.

I think computer age contribution to the proverb has been the anti-proverb which is usually a combination of visuals with some sort of cynical often ironic twist which is sometimes a variation of a proverb the perfect realization of which is the despair.com posters. Some of which include anti-proverbs such as
"That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable."

"If you're not a part of the solution, there's good money to be made in prolonging the problem."

"Dreams are like rainbows. Only idiots chase them."

"Every dark cloud has a silver lining, but lightning kills hundreds of people each year who try to find it."

"It's always darkest just before it goes pitch black."
