Internationally acclaimed novelist and travel writer Paul Theroux traveled for six months in 2001 and again after September 11 through Africa, from the Mediterranean Sea to the continent's Cape of Good Hope.
Theroux noticed an Africa frustratingly different than the one he experienced as a Peace Corps teacher and university lecturer 40 years ago. The Africa he saw this time was filled with corrupt governments, unreliable transportation networks, self-dramatizing Western aid workers and open anti-Americanism.
Theroux says that the reactions to America's war on terror vary in different parts of the African continent. In his view, Islamic Africa has a much stronger, non-sympathetic view of America's policies than Christian Africa.
