In 1980, Loung Ung came to the United States as a ten-year-old Cambodian refugee, a survivor of years of hunger and violence under the Khmer Rouge. Her older sister, Chou, was left behind in Cambodia. It would be fifteen years before the two sisters were reunited.
Loung Ung has written about her story of survival and loss from her sister in her new book, “Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind.”
